Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme

The recent concerns raised about the government’s proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme allowing private Green Power use to offset industry carbon production during the first five years of the scheme is a unacceptable. It is nonsense that consumers, who are paying a voluntary premium to reduce their environmental and carbon foot print, will be subsidising the ongoing pollution of corporate and industry players under the scheme. Business produces a large proportion of the world’s carbon and environmental foot print and has a generally greater financial, technical and logistical capacity to address the issue than do individuals. Business should progressively be shaping the future for individuals by making environmentally sustainable and commercially responsible decisions.

Eco Sanctuaries which owns Flour Cask Bay Sanctuary is only a small player but purchases 100% solar generated green power for grid based parts of its business under the belief that this will enhance the progress of solar development and investment while reducing our overall impact on the environment. It is also an important component of our sustainability aspirations. We also generate our own 100% solar power for off grid accommodation. In addition the business supports purchase and restoration of endangered species habitat to ensure the business not only offsets any other carbon production but utilises the carbon generation to deliver multiple outcomes for the environment and community. We all need to contribute to make a difference and Eco Sanctuaries’ additional efforts should not be needlessly squandered by others.

If you want your existing efforts to count or feel strongly about the efforts of individuals in changing the shape of our carbon foot print and environmental impact, then register a comment or let your federal member, the Minister for Environment and the Minister for Climate Change know that your individual or business contribution should be counted and certainly should not be available to offset those who are not pulling their weight.

Kangaroo Island declared National Landscape

Kangaroo Island has been declared Australia’s ninth National Landscape by Tourism Australia. The Island joins a prestigious but small list of Australian icon landscapes that illustrate the best natural experiences Australia has to offer. Kangaroo Island has been declared because of its spectacular wildlife, great nature based activites, stunning coastline and great local food and wine. The Island has become part of the Tourism Australia key destination marketing program and will be used to broaden knowledge about Australian tourism experiences. Spring has sprung at Flour Cask Bay Sanctuary

After a few dry years and a winter with not as much rain as we could use, spring is shaping up to be a bumper crop of colourful blossoms. A myriad of bright yellows, pinks, purples, reds, blues and whites are scattered across the landscape. Birds are preparing to nest and a range of migratory waders are making the best of full lakes and lagoons. Echidnas are every where and Goannas will be out from their winter slumber soon. What a spectacular time to visit.

We were proud to host Iain and the crew from Camper Trailer Australia Magazine who came to Kangaroo Island to test out a new camper trailer. They were originally only staying at Flour Cask Bay Sanctuary for a night but ended up staying three days to take advantage of the Sanctuary’s privacy and easy access for touring around Kangaroo Island. Salt Lake wetland recovery boosted with 9000 trees

We recently completed our major winter rehabilitation program including planting and seeding about 8ha of Flour Cask Bay Sanctuary with local native species. As they grow they will enhance wildlife habitat and reduce the impacts of salinity on the surrounding lagoons. It will also improve the amenity for visitors. Check out what , The Islander, Kangaroo Island’s local paper had to say about the outcome.

Thanks go out to all the volunteers from Urrbrae Agricultural High School in Adelaide, and the local community for all their great effort. We look forward to doing an even bigger and better job next winter.
